Introduction

Dear Singers/Choir Directors,

Jersey is a unique Island with a genuine choral tradition and a character all of its own. Our Festival will offer you and your choir a wonderful venue in which to sing, to compete and to relax. We live in a very beautiful and historic Island only five miles from France. Once you are on the Island you will find its small size (nine miles by five) is deceptive - we enjoy hundreds of miles of lush countryside together with wonderful coastal scenery and outstanding beaches. We have many world class organisations such as the Gerald Durrell Wildlife Preservation Trust and the Eric Young Orchid Foundation which are open to the public. Jersey is full of artefacts and buildings from the Napoleonic Wars and the Second World War – it was the only part of Great Britain to be occupied by German forces – now we are delighted to sing in harmony with choirs from Germany and France!

The festival has been in existence since 1999 and is now a biennial event. It has established itself as an intimate, friendly, well-organised event with an emphasis on making life as easy as possible for participating choirs and their directors.

The organisation of the Festival is carried out by unpaid local choir members whose love of singing ensures that the Festival is run extremely efficiently and very much from the choirs and the choir directors view point. I conduct three choirs in the Island I frequently take them abroad, so I do know exactly what you need to make your trip to Jersey successful.

Your choir does not have to compete in the competitions. We are happy to welcome you to enjoy and participate in the concerts, any workshops, the parties and the general festival atmosphere. All the venues for concerts (chiefly churches) and for the Competition (Victoria College and The Gloucester Hall in Fort Regent) have very good acoustics. Rehearsal rooms with or without pianos are available – every care is made to ensure that your choir will be able to perform at its very best level. A jury of up to three international judges with a wealth of experience and knowledge will give verbal and written adjudications of those choirs which compete and, of course, there are large cash prizes and trophies to be won.

We have experts to organise your travel and hotels and I promise you that no other festival will look after you or give you such personal attention as the International Choir Festival of Jersey.
